August 22nd the 28th is Massachusetts Farmers’ Market Week! - Clich here for the actual proclimation from Governor Patrick at our Market Manager’s tent for you to see, but the proclamation “urges all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.”

Did you know that the USDA ranked Massachusetts No. 6 in the nation for the number of farmers’ markets???- There are 228 in Massachusetts this year! Nationwide, the number of farmers’ markets grew 16 percent in 2010 from 5,274 to 6,132 markets.

“The Twelve” @ Kendall Square

Artist: Pandora LaCasse
“The Twelve” at Kendall Square is a mixed-media illuminated sculpture.

The piece is comprised of three curvilinear steel forms each a segment of a circle with a radius of five feet. Radiating from these, are twelve light forms (blue and white) on steel poles. The three structures placed along a serpentine configuration are connected with flat wooden sections (seats) creating an intimate and accessible place. The sides of the steel forms have a Japanese Brown Patina. This soft coloring along with the use of the curvilinear line contrast the hard edges and mass of the steel; a visual play with materials.

A blue oxide patina was placed on the tops to accent the serpentine direction. The height of light forms is scaled to create a smaller more intimate space within the larger setting. They curve and bend randomly along the piece creating a dynamic lighted canopy. The artists goal for the Kendall Square Light and Sculpture Installation is to create a moment within the larger context of the Square where time pauses, where beauty, humor and a little out of the ordinary coexist.

Taza Chocolate Needs Your Help!

The good news is Taza Chocolate will be at the Farmer Market @ Kendall Square this week, the bad news is that they were hit terribly hard by the flash flooding that ripped through Somerville Saturday afternoon.

There newly renovated factory was completed and finally producing chocolate as of last Wednesday, the retail space was ready for fixtures, and all of the office and common areas were completed and functioning; but as of Saturday night everything was under many inches of black, filthy water! The staff was on-site till late into the evenings this past week doing everything they could to save the chocolate and sadly ripping the new walls back down at ground level and throwing out many office furnishings.

As you can imagine this is a tough hit for us and extremely disheartening. Please spread the word that Taza Chocolate would super appreciate all of your support by buying some chocolate or a fabulous Taza Tshirt or the online store! They are doing the best best they can to rally and plan to get through this but it will be an uphill climb.

July 1st Performer: Emily Elbert

Raised in Texas on a musical diet of Antonio Carlos Jobim, James Taylor, and ‘60s radio, 21-year-old Emily Elbert first picked up the guitar when she was 15. Her self-taught approach on the instrument grew to include singing and songwriting, and her passionate involvement in these three soon led to the creation of her debut CD of original material, Bright Side, in 2006.

Elbert then moved to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music, but simultaneously continues to maintain a musical career. She’s toured with G Love & Special Sauce and Kaki King, and was a featured artist at the North American Folk Music Alliance in Memphis. Boston-based WUMB-FM radio named her the Best New Artist of 2008. She has played more than 300 gigs worldwide, from Los Angeles to New York, from Alaska to Tennessee, from Peru to Puerto Rico, and has just returned from Scotland, where she was a guest of the Burnsong International Songwriting Contest, played for Scottish Parliament, and was broadcast on BBC Radio. Elbert is currently in the process of recording her second studio album in New York, expected to be released in fall 2010.
