The Cambridge Public Library is pleased to announce Rita Williams-Garcia, the New York Times bestselling author of novels for children and teen readers, will be the speaker at the sixth annual Margret and H.A. Rey Curious George Lecture on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 11 a.m. Registration is required to attend this virtual event.
The Margret and H.A. Rey Curious George lecture series is an initiative developed by the Cambridge Public Library in partnership with the Curious George Fund and the Cambridge Public Library Foundation. The series aims to connect children and their families to the magic of reading through a memorable experience with an author or illustrator. Speakers are chosen in honor of Margret and H.A. Rey, Cambridge residents who authored many beloved children’s books, including Curious George.
Rita Williams-Garcia’s middle grade novels such as Clayton Byrd Goes Underground, One Crazy Summer and others in the Gaither Sisters series have been named Coretta Scott King Award winners, National Book Award finalists, Newbery Honor Book winners, and recipients of the Scott O’Dell Prize for Historical Fiction. Her most recent young adult novel, A Sitting in St. James, received a 2021 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. “I am delighted we are hosting an author as distinguished as Rita Williams-Garcia for this year’s Margret and H.A. Rey Curious George Lecture,” said Dr. McCauley Director of Libraries, “this lecture series demonstrates our commitment to empower young readers and connect them with talented authors.”
All Cambridge Public Library locations will be offering children free copies of Rita Williams-Garcia’s books beginning Monday, March 28 leading up to the event, while supplies last.
Rita Williams-Garcia has served on the faculty at the Vermont College of Fine Arts Writing for Children MFA Program and she resides in Queens, New York.
