Eat @ Kendall: Getting to know Commonwealth’s Chef Nookie

In many respects, Chef Steve “Nookie” Postal exemplifies the Kendall Square restaurant. His restaurant Commonwealth began with the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign. Steve and his team meticulously sourced  the design elements of his 6,500 square-foot space to ensure a unique environment that showcase antique, recycled and elemental furnishings. Above all, Nookie created a wonderful hybrid concept that combines honest, fresh New England fare and a marketplace to grab a fresh-baked delicacy or  purchase locally sourced goods.

Steve’s diverse life experience—including a stint as reality TV cooking show finalist and six seasons as Executive Chef at the iconic Fenway Park—has not impacted his sense of humor (to wit, Commonwealth’s dessert menu features “Brunettes Do It Better” and “Blondes Have More Fun” ice cream flavors) or the things that he loves.

 What motivated you to enter the hospitality business?

I love feeding people and making them happy. And being around food makes me happy. That’s why being a chef and restaurant owner is a perfect match for me. It’s a win-win.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? 

The simplest things are the hardest things to do right.

What is your favorite menu ingredient and why?

I actually don't have a favorite menu ingredient. I'm driven and inspired by the seasons. Today, it’s the first of the season cucumbers, so I’m all about cucumber salads, cucumber pickles, cucumber soups…

What’s the one food or beverage you can’t live without?

I mean, is this a trick question? Water!

What about Kendall Square inspires your work?

Kendall is such a diverse and eclectic community. We love welcoming residents and entrepreneurs and employees through our doors, every day. The “Next Big Thing” is going to come out of Kendall Square. And I can say I fed them. 

Bonus question: If you had the opportunity to invite four people (alive or deceased) to dinner, who would they be and what would you serve?

My father, mother, brother and wife.  It wouldn't matter what was on the table.
